First letter (C) will always be C denoting Canadian aircraft
Second letter (x) denotes the Role
Three numbers (nnn) are assigned to the main type of aircraft 
Suffix letter (S) (optional) denotes aircraft type version
For example CC-130H C C 130 H

C = Cargo/Transport 
E = Electronic Warfare
F = Fighter 
H = Helicopter 
P = Patrol/Reconnaissance/Anti-Submarine Warfare

U = UAV 
X = Research/Experimental

Not in current use: 
SR = Search and Rescue as in CSR-123 Otter and CSR-110 Albatross 
O = Observation as in CO-119 L-19A/Cessna L182 

Optional Suffix Letter
Alphabetical letter omitting I and O denoting type version.

D reserved for dual version of an aircraft
