| On 31 May 2008, several hundred vehicles drove from
Centennial Park, Trenton, to Downsview Park, Toronto, along the Highway
of Heroes following the
route taken by our fallen comrades during their repatriation from
Afghanistan. Some one said it should be called the "Highway of
Fallen Heroes" and I agree. Members of the CAV (Canadian Army Veterans) lead packets of motorcycles and cars from Trenton to Toronto. The last packet was the "Red" packet consisting of red vehicles representing our fallen comrades. There were ceremonies in Trenton and Toronto, along with a short memorial. It was an emotional day seeing the families, and seeing the supporters waving from the overpasses along the "Highway of Heroes". Although I personally do not believe the names should have been on the car, it was not my call and I try to leave "politics" out of supporting our fallen heroes, their families, and our Forces. There was a lot of controversy around this rally including why was it not held on Friday. If it had been held on a Friday, a lot of us would not have been able to participate due to our jobs or other reasons. Having attended past repatriations at Trenton, and with another one unfortunately coming up shortly as this is written, it was a way to show support and for the families to show we have not forgotten the sacrifice made by their loved ones. Below links to articles are pictures taken at Centennial Park, Trenton, and Downsview Park, Toronto. Unfortunately I was not able to take pictures of the overpasses and roadside supporters.
